AI website builders for local businesses: what they do well, and what to check before you trust one
"Build your website with AI" is on every website builder's homepage now. For a busy owner that sounds like the answer: no designer, no writing, done in minutes. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it produces a page that says things about your business that are not true. Here is how to tell the difference.
What "AI website builder" actually means
There are two very different kinds, and they are sold with the same words.
- The questionnaire kind. You type your business name and a line about what you do, and it writes the whole site from that. It has nothing else to go on, so it fills the gaps with what businesses like yours usually say.
- The kind that starts from real information. It reads something that already exists about your business, such as your Google listing, your reviews or your menu, and builds the site from that. It still writes, but it writes about you rather than about a typical business.
The second kind is slower to build and much harder to get wrong. Ask which one you are looking at before anything else.
Where it genuinely helps
- The first draft. Most owners never get past a blank page. A decent draft in a minute is worth more than a perfect site that never gets written.
- Layout and design. Choosing fonts, colours and the order of sections is skilled work. A good builder does it well enough that you never have to think about it.
- Speed. Live today, not in three weeks after four rounds of feedback.
- Language. It can write in the language your customers actually use, which a template never will.
Where it quietly goes wrong
- It invents. "Family-run since 1985." "Award-winning service." "Our customers love our signature dishes." If you did not say it, a questionnaire builder made it up, and a customer who notices stops trusting everything else on the page.
- It writes fake praise. Some builders add testimonials that no customer ever wrote. In many countries that is not just embarrassing; fake reviews on a business's own site can break consumer protection rules.
- It gets facts wrong. Opening hours, prices, addresses and phone numbers rewritten by a model are where real customers get turned away at a closed door.
- It uses stock photos. A photo of a dish you do not serve or a salon that is not yours does more harm than no photo at all.
- Everything sounds the same. Generated copy tends towards the same polished, empty phrases. Your site ends up reading like your competitor's.
Five checks before you publish
- Are the facts copied, not written? Hours, address, phone, prices: these should come straight from your own information, word for word.
- Can you trace every claim? For each sentence that praises you, ask where it came from. If the answer is "the AI thought it sounded good", delete it.
- Are the photos yours? Real photos of your place, even imperfect ones, beat beautiful stock every time.
- Can you change it yourself? You will want to fix a word, swap a photo or hide a section. If every edit means a support ticket, keep looking.
- What happens when you stop paying? Check whether the site disappears, whether the free version keeps working, and whether you can take your domain with you.
How we do it at Tomobuild
We built Tomobuild around these checks, so here is exactly what it does and does not do.
- It starts from your Google listing. Your name, address, hours, phone, photos, rating and reviews are already there. Nothing is typed in.
- It writes only from what customers said. The headline and the reasons people come back are drawn from your real reviews: the dish they name, the stylist they trust. Each reason is shown with the short quote it came from.
- Facts are never rewritten. Hours, address, phone, prices and your rating are copied exactly, and the rating links to Google so anyone can check.
- It refuses to invent. If your listing has too few reviews to write from honestly, you get a clean, factual page instead of made-up praise.
- Photos are yours, from your listing, and on Pro you can add or replace them.
- It is free, with no time limit. You can claim it, edit it or take it down whenever you want.
When an AI builder is the wrong choice
If you need online booking with payments, a shop with stock and delivery, or a members' area, you need a fuller platform than any instant builder offers. For most local businesses, though, the job is simpler: be findable, look real, show what customers say, and make it one tap to call or message. That part should take a minute, not a month.
If you want to see what yours would look like, paste your Google Maps link on the home page. You will see every sentence and where it came from before you decide anything.
